AL DI MEOLA
Giant, legendary: epithets are wasted when talking about Al Di Meola,
four times voted winner of the best guitarist award by readers of Guitar
Player Magazine.
He is among the greatest exponents of “fusion”, a rock and jazz mix that
became part of his life in his teens, when he moved on from the Beatles
and began listening to Elvis Presley, making it his career when at seven-
teen he enrolled at Greenwich Village in New York, where he took guitar
lessons from Larry Coryell, who Di Meola later described as the “father of
fusion.” From here he started his extraordinary career as a soloist and in
a successful partnership with bass player Stanley Clarke, violinist Jean-
Luc Ponty, and guitarists John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia.
His albums have sold a total of about nine million copies worldwide. In
Italy he is also known for a long tour with Andrea Parodi, during which a
live CD entitled Midsummer Night in Sardinia was recorded.
Recently he worked on a CD in duo with Pino Daniele.
